High Culture
Opera, Ballet & Classical Music in Malta

Teatru Manoel in Valletta is one of Europe's great cultural treasures — built in 1731, one of the oldest continuously operating theatres in the world. The 2025-2026 season spans over 50 productions including Verdi's opera Falstaff, the musical Amélie, and performances by the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the newly formed De Valette Chamber Orchestra.

The Valletta Baroque Festival each January brings world-class baroque performers to venues including St John's Co-Cathedral. Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel performed under the painted vault of one of Europe's greatest baroque churches is an experience music lovers travel from across Europe to witness.
The Malta International Arts Festival in summer uses Valletta's outdoor spaces — St George's Square, the Upper Barrakka Gardens, and the Grand Harbour — as stages for international theatre, dance, and music companies.

Village Festas & Fireworks — Malta's Most Spectacular Tradition

Malta's village festa tradition is one of the most spectacular cultural events anywhere in the world. Every village has a patron saint. Every patron saint has a festa. And every festa features fireworks that have to be seen to be believed — the product of a uniquely Maltese artisan tradition passed down through generations.
The fireworks-making tradition in Malta is unlike anywhere else. Each village has its own petard factory and the rivalry between villages in the quality of their displays is intensely competitive. Ground-level petards — murtali — explode at street level with earth-shaking force while aerial shells light up the entire sky simultaneously. The combination lasts for hours.
The festa builds over several days with the church illuminated by thousands of coloured lights, brass bands marching through the streets, the statue of the patron saint carried through the village, and the entire population — and half the island — filling every street, square, and rooftop. For UK visitors arriving in Malta during a village festa, it is one of the most memorable travel experiences available anywhere in Europe.

Maltese Food — A Delicious Collision of Cultures

Maltese food is a direct expression of the island's history — Arab spice and technique, Italian pasta tradition, British influence in the baking, and the Mediterranean's extraordinary abundance of fresh seafood. The result is a cuisine that is unpretentious, ingredient-driven, and consistently excellent in the right places.
The pastizz is Malta's most iconic food — a flaky diamond-shaped pastry filled with either ricotta or mushy peas, sold from roadside kiosks for less than a euro. Fenek — rabbit slow-cooked with garlic, tomatoes, and red wine — is the national dish. The Sunday fenek lunch is a Maltese institution.

For seafood, the harbour village of Marsaxlokk is essential. The restaurants lining the waterfront serve fish that was on the boat that morning. Lampuki — Malta's seasonal dolphin fish, available September to November — is the prize catch of the year.
Kinnie — Malta's bittersweet soft drink made from bitter oranges — is the island's unofficial national drink. Cisk lager, brewed in Malta since 1928, is among the best local beers in the Mediterranean. Both are to be drunk cold, outdoors, with a view of the sea.
Pastizzi
Flaky pastry with ricotta or mushy peas. Malta's most iconic snack. Try them fresh from a pastizzeria.
Fenek
Rabbit stew — the national dish. Slow-cooked with garlic, tomatoes and red wine.

Bigilla
Thick broad bean dip with garlic and herbs. Served everywhere as a starter.
Imqaret
Deep-fried date pastries. Street food at village festas and market stalls.
