Malta Snorkelling — Europe's Clearest Waters

Why Malta

The Best Snorkelling in Europe

Malta's waters offer a snorkelling experience that ranks among the finest in Europe — and competes with far more exotic destinations globally. The combination of extraordinary water clarity, warm temperatures for six months of the year, and a coastline studded with natural pools, sea caves, and underwater rock formations creates conditions that reward snorkellers of every ability.

Visibility in Malta's coastal waters regularly exceeds 20 metres and can reach 30 metres in optimal conditions. This means that even in relatively shallow water of 3-4 metres, snorkellers can see the seafloor, the surrounding rock formations, and marine life in crisp, undistorted detail that is simply not available in most European seas.

The marine life adds further appeal. Malta's waters support a rich Mediterranean ecosystem including octopus, moray eels, sea bream, grouper, barracuda, and in the right conditions, seahorses and rays. The Cirkewwa underwater statue park — a collection of sculptures submerged specifically to create a snorkelling and diving attraction — has become one of Malta's most photographed underwater features.

For families, Malta's snorkelling conditions are particularly well-suited. The calm, sheltered bays at Mellieha and St George's Bay allow younger children to snorkel safely, while the extraordinary clarity means they can see marine life from the surface without needing to dive.

Best Snorkelling Spots in Malta, Gozo and Comino

The Blue Lagoon, Comino

All levelsBoat from Mellieha/Cirkewwa

The Blue Lagoon is Malta's most iconic snorkelling location and one of the most photographed bodies of water in the Mediterranean. The turquoise clarity of the water — caused by the white sandy bottom reflecting light — creates visibility that regularly exceeds 25 metres. The shallow edges are perfect for beginners and families, while the deeper channels offer more to explore for experienced snorkellers. Visit early morning before the day-trip boats arrive for the most magical experience.

St Peter's Pool, Marsaxlokk

IntermediateShore entry

St Peter's Pool is a natural limestone swimming hole on Malta's southern coast and arguably the finest snorkelling location on the main island for underwater scenery. The rock formations below the surface are extraordinary — caves, archways, and ledges that create a dramatic underwater landscape in exceptional visibility. There are no facilities, which keeps crowds manageable. The pool is a 15-minute walk from the nearest car park.

Cirkewwa Underwater Statue Park, North Malta

All levelsShore entry

The Cirkewwa area in northern Malta has been developed as a dedicated snorkelling and diving destination, including an underwater statue park — a collection of sculptures placed specifically to create a unique attraction. The figures, covered in marine growth, are visible from the surface in the excellent visibility. The area also offers natural reef snorkelling and is sheltered enough for beginners and children.

Ghajn Tuffieha Bay, Northwest Malta

All levelsShore entry (steps)

Ghajn Tuffieha is one of Malta's most beautiful bays — a sweep of golden-red sand backed by dramatic cliffs. The rocky headlands at each end of the bay offer excellent snorkelling with rich marine life including octopus and sea bream. The water clarity is exceptional and the underwater rock formations are interesting. Reached by a long staircase from the car park above.

Inland Sea & Sea Cave, Dwejra, Gozo

All levelsBoat tour or shore

The Inland Sea at Dwejra in Gozo is a natural lagoon connected to the open sea through a sea cave tunnel. Small boats take visitors through the tunnel into the open sea — the experience of emerging from the cave into the blue Mediterranean is remarkable. The snorkelling in the Inland Sea itself and around the cave entrance is excellent, with clear water, interesting rock formations, and good marine life.

Wied il-Ghasri, Gozo

IntermediateShore entry via gorge

Wied il-Ghasri is a narrow gorge in Gozo that opens onto a small pebble beach with exceptional snorkelling. The water is incredibly clear even by Maltese standards, and the underwater landscape at the gorge entrance is dramatic. Marine life includes moray eels and octopus. The access involves a walk through the gorge and some scrambling over rocks, which makes it less crowded than more accessible sites.
